Portal Mechanics

The 8 circular tokens on the board are Portals. They allow pieces to teleport instantly across the board.

• Entry: Move any piece onto a square containing a Portal. This counts as your move.
• The Void: Once you enter, the game pauses slightly. Your piece enters "hyperspace".
• Exit: You must select any other available Portal to exit from.
  • You cannot exit onto a square occupied by another piece.

Features

• Move History: Every move is shown with the time it was played.
• Server Default Portals: Only the admin can change the default portal layout used for new games.
• Draws: Local and computer games can be recorded as a draw from More tools. Online human games can use draw offers in the lobby game view.
• Teach Mode: Finished games can be reviewed and annotated separately in Teach Mode. Active games do not show teaching comments or arrows.
• AI Difficulty: Open AI levels and board view to choose separate White AI and Black AI levels for AI-vs-AI matches.

Puzzle Builder

• Use the side-panel Puzzles section to load the first saved puzzle immediately.
• Choosing another puzzle from the list loads it onto the board without a separate load button.
• Log in, then use Create to create and save your own puzzles with unique titles.
• Use the puzzle scope selector to keep a puzzle local/puzzle-only, or mark it as offerable for online human-vs-human puzzle games.
• Choose a piece, portal, or erase tool from the side panel, then click board squares.
• Set whose turn it is and which color the AI should play, then choose Play or Save.
• Puzzle mode allows multiple kings for a color. Check is ignored until that color has only one king left. Capturing the last king wins.

Design Philosophy

• Portal Chess is meant to feel familiar first: regular chess movement remains the foundation.
• Portals turn space into a resource. A portal can become an attack lane, a rescue square, or bait.
• Puzzles are for exploring unusual positions quickly, without forcing every setup to look like normal chess.
